Learn to Balance Work and Life like Rachel Beider:

To kick off our entrepreneur spotlight series, we interviewed our Brooklyn neighbor, Rachel Beider, owner of Massage Outpost. And just in time for the opening of the third location in Dumbo, Brooklyn! Rachel also works as a business consultant and speaker within the wellness industry, with her work featured in EntrepreneurHuffington PostThe Wall Street Journaland Forbes. Busy is the name of the game—if you want to learn how Rachel manages her time, keep reading.

Describe a typical “day in the life” of Rachel Beider.

I wake up and spend a few minutes in bed, cuddling my dog Winston—he’s a 7 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I love taking a few moments in the morning to relax and wake up slowly. After walking and feeding the dog, I head to the local gym to catch a morning yoga class, or to lift weights. I find that I sleep a lot better on days that I’ve worked out, so I make it a point to go a few days a week. I spend the morning catching up on work emails, listening to podcasts and having phone or Skype meetings with my consulting clients (I work with wellness entrepreneurs who want to start or grow practices in their field—including massage therapists, acupuncturists, psychotherapists, aestheticians, yoga teachers etc.) I might drop by one of my massage studios (there are 3 in Brooklyn) to catch up on a bit of work in the afternoon. I enjoy cooking dinner at home at night, catching up on reading (one business book per week!) and going to bed on the early side.

As an entrepreneur, what does work/life balance mean to you?

Work/life balance means having enough energy at the end of my work day to enjoy my time with friends and family.

What is your method for balancing your work and personal life, if at all?

I make it a point to connect with friends every day—either on a lunch break, an afternoon tea, over a phone chat, or in taking a class. Planning things in advance really helps.
